Loch Katrine And A Cruise On The SS Sir Walter Scott

Loch Katrine and A Cruise

Loch Katrine

Since Victorian times Loch Katrine has drawn in tourists. This is all thanks to Sir Walter Scott. He fell in love with the area. His vivid descriptions proved so alluring that, generations later, are still drawing people in.

Located deep in The Trossachs National Park, Loch Katrine is a beautiful destination. Tourists come to walk and cycle along the shores or to ride on one of two ships that sail the waters. Visitors can choose the more modern lady of the lake or the historic and majestic SS Walter Scott.

The SS Sir Walter Scott

The SS Walter Scott is a 118-year-old steamship. Its original engine still powers it. It is now, however, displayed under an open cover so that you can watch it work as you ride the boat. The boat has been beautifully maintained. It still has many of the original features from when it first took to the waters of Loch Katrine. There is no other boat like this one still in operation today.

The boat is 110 feet in length and 19 feet across. Despite being over a century old, the boat still carries thousands of passengers every year.

The ship had quite a journey before it began its life on the loch. It was built in Dumbarton, disassembled, then transported by barge and carriage to Stronachlachar, where it was rebuilt. Since this time it has undergone a few changes. While the original engine is still in use it has been upgraded so that the boat can use cleaner fuel.

Shopping And Dining

Loch Katrine has a long history as a relaxation spot. No relaxation spot is complete without great food and a spot of shopping. When it comes to dining you can choose between the Steamship Cafe, which overlooks the loch and serves locally sourced food and drink or the Pier Cafe at Stronachlacher.

To find a souvenir of your visit, you can delve into the treasure of Katrine Gifts. Housed in the old boathouse this store is a treasure trove of local crafts, books and some local, traditional ales and spirits.
